I watched the race. The crash was one of the worst I've seen. Watching the replay is nothing compared to seeing it unfold live.

I could tell from the reaction of the Safety crews that Dan was not okay. Given the magnitude of the crash, It was amazing 14 other drivers basically "walked away".

Watching the replay, the car went into the catch fence cockpit first. The driver's area caught one of the support poles for the fence. If the car had hit the fence at any other angle, the crash probably would have been survivable.

Rest in Peace Dan.

You will be missed.

It's amazing that with all the safety they design into the cars and tracks these days, the ultimate price is never far from any of them. I was quite busy, and only heard about it from my mother. I refuse to watch replays of a man die. I will not pass judgement on something I did not see, so I have little to offer in that regard.

I will say that I was suprised to hear that they wanted to blame it on something, anything really, and have started with the # of cars on the track. Jack, you saw the start, did it look like having an extra car in the field was the one thing that would had made the life or death difference? Seems half the cars were the ones involved, so only 15 would be too many.

Then there is the speed factor. All day I kept hearing "220 MPH", as if this was an unusually high speed. They do go much faster right? 235+? Top Fuel cars hit over 300 in 1,000 feet. F1 cars touched 220+ at big tracks like Hokenhiem in the old days. Bill Elliott went over that too. No, I'm certain that these were expected speeds at this track.

Be on guard gents. This will lead to a discussion on racing saftey, and another step towards restraining the sport. It is, and has always been a dangerous sport. It by it's very nature will always be a death defying spectical. But every time a man dies in the world of racing it is the reminder of how far they are willing to push for success that is used to legislate changes in the name of saftey.

I rarely watched IRL (or Champ cars in the past) so I cannot say when the last fatality took place, or what was changed as a result. But when Kalitta died in a Top Fuel car a few years back, they went from 1320' (1/4 mile) to 1,000 feet. They changed the way the tires were constucted, and looked at some other things to make it 'safer' in the future. But, wrecks still happen, and guys get injured. It's only a matter of time before another will be seriously hurt. Such is the sport.

A while back at the Texas Motor Speedway, they were running the track during practice and some of the drivers were actually blacking out due to the sustained high speeds on the banking. Those speeds? In excess of 245. They cancelled the race and installed another 'aerodynamic device' to keep the speeds down. My point is that the speeds will always be very high. But untill it becomes a factor of the limits of human endurance (blood rushing to the right side of the brain caused some drivers to momentarily loose focus in Texas) than I hope they do not call for drastic speed reduction of open wheel racing.

I hope that Dans' family will be strong during this awful time in there lives. I will keep them in my prayers and will have yet another name to list as an example of men who risked all in pursuit of what he felt was his calling in life.

God's Speed indeed Dan, God Speed.

I heard dirty air from behind the lead cars leave a ripple effect like a wake for the rear cars to hit and its turbulent air. Also, the dogleg and banking make it a handful ,im sure.i remember the blackouts 3D, glad thats not an issue, hope they work it out.sad stuff

Yes, very sad indeed 5Card. I just hope that new rules in the name of 'safety' won't dramaticly reduce speeds in the series known for speed. Now that would be sad.

Very sad indeed, brings home the fact that race car drivers are a cut above the rest, almost like gods among men.The chosen few who are willing to risk death for the sake of pushing the limits of human capabilities. We the fans and lovers of racing will forever remember these brave and courageous men.My condolences to his family and friends. On that note lets not forget that even though indy cars are not as technologically advanced as formula 1, they share many similar characteristics and racing cars that are basically fighter jets on wheels around oval tracks, aerodynamic turbulence is always present.Once there is a disruption in airflow, taking into consideration the flat underbodies that these cars possess, bad things can and unfortunately do happen.

Well said Joker. Open wheel racing has always been very dangerous. As safe as they try to make them, it will always be susceptible calamities such as these.
